Put Winter Vaccinations on your ‘to do’ list
The festive season is drawing closer, a time that many of us will be spending with family and friends.

However, it is also the time of year when viruses such as flu and COVID-19 are more likely to spread.

It takes about 10 days after receiving the flu and COVID-19 vaccines for the body to build up maximum protection, so those eligible for one or both vaccines who have not come forward are being urged to plan ahead and top-up their protection in time for the festive period. To date, this year, only half of those eligible in the Western Isles have had their vaccinations.

Winter vaccinations protect you and those most vulnerable around you. Last winter in Scotland, hospital admissions for flu and COVID-19 peaked on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day respectively.

The following groups are eligible for both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines this winter:

· Frontline health and social care workers

· Residents and staff in care homes for older adults

· Those aged 65 and over

· Those aged 6 months to 64 years of age who are at higher clinical risk from COVID-19

· Pregnant women

· Carers aged 16-64

· Household contacts of those with a weakened immune system aged 12-64

Adults eligible for the flu vaccine only:

· Those aged 50 to 64-year-olds with no underlying conditions

· Those aged 18 to 49-year-old with an eligible condition

Childhood flu vaccine:

· Children aged 2 to 5 who are not yet at school

· All primary and secondary school pupils

If you have not yet attended your scheduled appointment, or have not been invited but think you may be eligible, either visit www.nhsinform/scot/wintervaccines to check your eligibility or contact 0808 196 8383 to schedule an appointment. '
