Learning to Trust Jesus (2) – Sinking Peter Saved by Jesus
- In Matthew 14:28 we read that Peter asked Jesus to command him to come to where Jesus was (standing on the sea). Discuss the following:
Why is being with Jesus (ie communion with Jesus) important to a Christian?
What does tell you about Peter’s (i) desire for Jesus and (ii) love for Jesus?
As a disciple of Jesus, in what ways should your love and desire for him be shown? - Jesus commanded Peter to come to him, as he had asked, so Peter stepped out onto the sea.
Why is it important that we believe this actually happened?
In the sermon the minister used “adaptive cruise control” as an illustration. Discuss why we are reluctant at times to give over control of our life to Jesus?
Peter stepped out on the basis of Christ’s command. In Study 2 (Luke 5 v 5) we have a similar point made. Why is it important that our actions be based upon God’s word?, - Why did Peter begin to sink? From your own experience list four things that you have found liable to distract you from keeping Jesus in the focus of your faith.
- When Peter cried out for help Jesus reached out and took hold of him. What do we learn from this about:
The first step we must take towards salvation or recovery.
Where we find assurance in facing life’s demanding situations. - Is it good for us to have doubts about God? Explain your answer in the light of what Jesus said to Peter (verse 31).
- Read verse 33. Can we worship Jesus without a true confession about him? Can we make a true confession and not worship him?
