Study Questions on the Life of Simon Peter: 2

Study 2 - Luke 5 verses 1-11

The Lesson on the Lake

  1. Jesus took possession of Simon’s boat and after teaching the people he commanded Simon to launch out into the deep. What does this tell us about:

Who Jesus is? See also Book of Psalms, psalm 50 verses 10-12.
The right of possession Jesus has on us as his disciples and on our conduct, and even on what we possess? See also 1 Corinthians 6 verses 19-20 for the particular basis of this right.
What is your own response to this?

  2. Looking at verses 4 and 5, describe the thoughts that would likely have been in Simon’s mind at that point.
  3. What significance do you attach to the words “but (nevertheless) at your word” in verse 5? In one word describe Simon’s action here (it begins with “o”!).
  4. Verse 8 describes Simon’s reaction when he saw the huge catch of fish.

What was it about this that led him to confess that he was “sinful”?
Why do you think he said “Depart from me” to Jesus?
Do you think that a confession to being “sinful” should appear in every Christian’s experience to some extent?

  5. Give some time to thinking about the things that make you afraid and make a list. For each of these how do Christ’s words “Do not be afraid” apply?
  6. In your own case what would “left everything and followed him” entail?
  7. Discuss what you found (a) comforting and (b) challenging in this passage and why.
